Bristol Old Vic Theatre

About the Client:

Bristol Old Vic is the longest continuously running theatre in the UK, established in 1818. The historic playhouse aims to inspire audiences with its own original productions, both at home and on tour, whilst nurturing the next generation of artists.

They use their funding to support experiment and innovation, to allow access to their programme for people who would not otherwise encounter it, or be able to afford it, and to keep their extraordinary heritage alive and animated.

Since 2016, while the theatre continues to present work, it has simultaneously been undergoing a multi-million pound redevelopment project to transform its front of house space into a warm and welcoming public building for all of Bristol to enjoy, create a new studio theatre and open up its unique theatrical heritage to the public for the first time.

Problem:

Within the renovations, the Bristol Old Vic team were looking to implement a high-density storage solution for their extensive collection of records and their marketing materials. Due to the age of the building, any solution needed to fit with its unique features, not cause damage to the structure and fit within the confined storage space that had been allocated. The Bristol Old Vic’s records contain a variety of mixed materials, sizes and shapes so the solution needed to be both flexible to the space, and to the needs of the items being stored. Some items were of historic value, and delicate, requiring specialised storage to avoid damage, additionally some materials were considered confidential and valuable, so the ability secure these was paramount.

Solution:

Rackline’s team recommended and installed 34 bays of Profile adjustable shelving mounted onto Monotrak mobile bases it’s Monotrak Mobile Solution. This was made up of eight mobile bases and one static base, the system was designed to be lockable to ensure confidentiality and security of the items being stored.

Steel end panels were fitted to the front of the system to complete the overall look and allow for referencing labels to be added. By using the Monotrak mobile system, the tracks could be placed onto the existing floor without the need to interfere with the ancient building.

The Result:

Rackline’s high-density Monotrak system achieved a 50% increase in storage capacity when compared to traditional static shelving. The units were bespoke designed to fit within the confined space allocated, and provided the ideal expansion storage for the needs or the team at the Bristol Old Vic.

Mr Aidan Woodburn, General Manager, commented “We were looking for a system that would maximise the storage capacity within a small area, provide flexibility for the variety of items that were to be stored, plus provide a level of security for our confidential records – Rackline provided an ideal solution, which was delivered on time and within our budget
