About the Client:
The Discovery Museum is a science museum and local history museum situated in Blandford Square, Newcastle upon Tyne, England. The museum contains displays of local history, including the ship, Turbinia.
The Discovery Museums is managed by Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums.
Issue:
The team at the discovery Museum were looking for ways to increase the capacity of their storage, and more effectively store its huge variety of artifacts. With such a huge selection of different items, often unique and delicate, the Discovery Museum Team required solutions that would allow for their safe storage (including specific environmental conditions) and allow for easy cataloging and retrieval. To achieve this they reached out to Rackline, the experts in the fit-out of museum archives for advice and solutions.
Solution:
After initial consultative visits to the site and examination of both the wide selection of artifacts, and the space available, the Rackline team provided numerous options to fit their needs and the individual needs of their items.
The Result – Safe Storage for their artifacts, and huge increases in available space:
Following the installation the racking has made a huge difference to how the team organise and keep items, the cataloging and storage methods mean that finding and recovering items is simple and items are kept safe.
The team at The Discovery Museum were thrilled with the result:
Steve McLean from the Discovery Museum said: “We are delighted with the storage system Rackline supplied, we worked together to achieve a unique solution that not only stores the artefacts successfully, but appreciates the fragility and uniqueness of the collection. The high quality finish of the systems allows public access to these areas. Racklines project team liaised closely with the museum staff to ensure minimal disruption and a smooth handover”
