About the Client
The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews (R&A) was founded on 14 May 1754, and has evolved over its 250+ year history, from a small club to one with over 2,500 members worldwide. Today the club states its 5 main objectives as:
- To be a members’ golf club, having a clubhouse with high-quality facilities and access to first-class golfing facilities for play, including competitions and matches, and for two Meetings of the members in the Spring and Autumn.
- To maintain the position of St Andrews as the home of golf and to assist the Trustees and the Management Committee of the St Andrews Links Trust in the development of appropriate golfing facilities.
- To provide temporary accommodation for members of the Club and others.
- To acquire and preserve records and artefacts relating to the history of golf, either directly or indirectly.
- To contribute through its members to the work of The R&A in its Governance, Championship and Golf Development roles.
The Requirement
During 2019/2020 the R&A’s board made the decision to expand it’s club house with addition of: a new male locker room area, new female locker rooms, a large members lounge, improved golf concierge area and bag storage racking.
To undertake the construction they approached Robertson construction to provide plans and orchestrate operations. The new areas were to be built underneath the existing clubhouse building, and involved the alteration, extension (triple its original size) and refurbishment of the existing basement area. This clubhouse overlooks the 18th hole of The Old Course at St Andrews links, and would continue to operate during the renovations works.
When it came to the construction, Robertson’s expert team undertook the major structural works (Excavation, piling, structural alterations and reinforcement), but when it came to the bag storage area they turned to Rackline to provide a solution that would maximise the space, and efficiency of operations.
The Solution – A Vast Golf Bag Storage Area
The construction works were complex, and combined with the Covid pandemic took a long period time to undertake. It was not until 2023 that the project was ready for the golf bag storage area to be constructed. In order to understand the requirement, Rackline visited site, audited the space and closely examined the plans prepared by the architects. They also examined the potential sizes of the bags and trolleys to be stored and worked out the maximum yield from the space.
After much deliberation and discussion, Rackline’s team suggested the installation of its Multitrak mobile bases, topped with 252 x bays of profile steel shelving (480mm wide x 500mm deep x 2 levels high) providing golf bag storage for 504 bags stored upright. The mobile nature of the system means that the entire floor space, bar a few aisles would be utilised. The Installation left space for multiple aisles, to allow the golf bag storage system to be opened simultaneously in multiple places. This would increase the density without affecting access to the bags.
Each cell is fitted with a retaining bar to ensure that the bags and trolleys stay in place.
