About the Client

Chesterfield Royal Hospital is an acute general hospital based in Chesterfield, Derbyshire, UK. The hospital is managed by the Chesterfield Royal Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.

The new modern hospital at Calow opened to patients on 29 April 1984. Officially opened by the HM Queen Elizabeth II in 1985 and was extended to include a maternity and gynaecology unit in 1989.

The National Gardens Scheme Macmillan Unit opened in November 2018. The two-storey building has 21 chemotherapy treatment chairs, two treatment beds, and three treatment rooms.

The Requirement – A new hospital storage area.

During 2016 the hospital team were looking to expand their hospital storage provision, to both increase capacity and efficiency within the hospital. An area was allocated for the storage of theatre kits and scrubs for the use in the operating theatres of the hospital. These were stored predominantly in tins with colour coding to enable the identification of the different kit types.

A space was allocated and partners were invited to provide layouts and solutions to store the thousands of kits and miscellaneous items. Rackline provided an audit of the space and was chosen based on its ability to not only maximise the space but also provide a full turnkey solution.

The Solution

Chesterfield Royal Hospital Storage

Rackline’s suggested solution involved the installation of its Monotrak mobile bases topped with its time tested Profile static shelving solutions. The shelving bays were built with sloping tops, and built in specific widths and depths to hold the maximum number of tins.

In total the install was designed to hold around 1600 tins in varying sizes, mixed with miscellaneous other items. The robust shelving solutions are manufactured from steel and powder coated in White, making them both tough and easy to clean.

The Multitrak carriages are designed to remove the need for aisles between the shelves, saving approximately 70% of the space associated with standard static shelving solutions.

The Result

The Chesterfield Royal has gained huge amounts of space for its scrub packs and other items. The use of roller racking and high density shelving has made the most of the space, providing storage to fit their current needs and giving them masses of capacity for future expansion.
