About the Client:

The National Oceanography Centre Southampton (NOCS) is a centre for research, teaching and technology development in Ocean and Earth science. NOCS was created in 1995, jointly between the University of Southampton and the UK Natural Environment Research Council and is located within the port of Southampton at a purpose-built dockside campus with modern facilities.

The Requirement:

The team at the National Oceanography Centre wanted to upgrade and enhance their largest teaching laboratory to maximise space.

They required a storage solution that would offer additional space for teaching, storage for equipment and provide more space around the perimeter of the room for setting up practicals and allow the movement of technical apparatus.

Another core requirement was the ability to house the large number of rock samples that were currently stored in the student benches.

Working closely with Rackline and HNW Architects, the team at NOCS were introduced to the concept of a powered mobile shelving solution. This was suggested due to its practical nature, and its efficient use of space.  The push button system offers a smooth open and close action, and is more practical for students who are often carrying trays containing materials.

The Solution – A Range of Mobile Shelving:

Rackline installed a number of its Powertrak Electronic Mobile Shelving Systems. The units are fitted around the perimeter of the laboratory, and one large system is installed at the front of the study/ teaching area. All of the Powertrak Systems include automatic aisle lighting, pin coded access and a locking system.

Within these storage systems Rackline designed and manufactured two tray styles to fit their different collections. The first is a pull-out tray system that allows students to pull out trays and take them to the benches. The second is a fixed tray system that is designed for staff use only.

Steel end panels were fitted to the perimeter systems and vinyl wrap used to enhance the front of the system.

With all the storage situated around the outer areas of the room it allowed the benches to be turned through 90 degrees and modern benches and stools purchased. The client also requested a vinyl finish that complements the new stool and bench system.

The Result:

The installed mobile shelving system provides a robust and visually appealing solution to their storage needs, with a range of robust shelving and drawers to house the huge collection of heavy rock samples. The systems are simple to use, and the removable trays make them practical for students and teaching staff alike.

“We are very pleased with our new powertrak storage system, it provides a practical solution to our storage requirements enabling our laboratory and study areas to be used more effectively.” – Stephen Hayward, Ocean and Earth Science
